Tween 80 (Polysorbate 80), a surfactant, has been widely used as a solvent for pharmacological experiments. Tween 80 can also reduce bacterial attachment and inhibit biofilm formation.

Tween 80 (Polysorbate 80) is a surfactant which can also reduce bacterial attachment and inhibit biofilm formation[1]. Solubility enhancement as high as 100-fold is achieved using 1% Tween 80 in vitro[2].

(In Vivo)

Tween 80 (Polysorbate 80) (IP; 10 ml/kg) significantly decreases locomotor activity at a concentration of 32% in saline (v/v) in male outbred (BALB/c x DBA/Z)F1 mice weighing 24-30 g[3].

Tween性状：为聚氧乙烯去水山梨醇单月桂酸酯和一部分聚氧乙烯双去水山梨醇单月桂酸酯的混合物。 作用与用途：为司盘和环氧乙烷的缩合物，由于其分子中有较多的亲水性基团一聚氧乙烯基，故亲水性强，为一种非离子型去污剂。常作为水包油（O/W）型乳化剂；可与其他乳化剂如月桂醇硫酸钠或司盘类合用，能增加乳剂的稳定性。也可作某些药物的增溶剂。

用途：1.生物学实验中乳化蛋白，在使用时，Tween 和同类型的Triton X-1OO(聚乙二醇辛基苯基醚)非离子型去污剂不破坏蛋白的结构，可减少对蛋白质之间原有的相互作用的破坏。离子型去污剂如SDS则破坏蛋白的结构。

2. 在生物学实验中作封闭剂，封闭剂应该封闭所有未结合位点而不替换膜上的靶蛋白、不结合靶蛋白的标位、也不与抗体或检测试剂有交叉反应。Tween-20有复性抗原的作用，可提高特异性的识别能力。在做western blot时，用惰性蛋白质或非离子去污剂封闭膜上的未结合位点，可以降低抗体的非特异性结合。最常见的封闭剂是BSA、脱脂奶粉、酪蛋白、明胶和Tween-20（0.05 – 0.1%）稀溶液。

3.常作为水包油（O/W）型乳化剂，使其他物质均匀在溶液中分散，主要用于农药、食品、化妆品。与其他乳化剂如月桂醇硫酸钠或司盘类合用，能增加乳剂的稳定性。吐温可用来使精油乳化后溶解于水液体中，完全发挥作用。相对来说，吐温20更温和一些，吐温80的乳化性更强一些。

4.药用：（1）可作某些药物的增溶剂。（2）有溶血作用，以吐温-80作用最弱。（3）水溶液加热后可产生混浊，冷后澄明，不影响质量。（4）在溶液中可干扰抑菌剂的作用。
